It has been said that as the family goes, so goes society. If society truly passes through the family, then it is greatly influenced by the work of family law attorneys. Scary? Not really. While the family law docket has all but taken over, we can be grateful that most practitioners in Bexar County are good lawyers and good human beings.

In its short history, the Family Law Section has risen to the challenge and increasing legal demands of families. Boasting a current membership of 189, it is one of the largest and most active SABA sections.

Our monthly luncheons at the Palm Restaurant offer great food, interesting topics and one free hour of CLE. Sergeant-at-Arms Karen Marvel has spearheaded the annual all-day “Extreme” Family Law Seminar with record attendance each year. Immediate past president Richard Loza, takes special care once a year to show Margaret Montemayor’s District Clerks Office our appreciation for their hard work by sponsoring a free lunch. In addition to other charitable contributions, board member Zan Brown initiated the Jackie Riebach Annual Scholarship Award, given to aid children referred to us from CPS. Also, last year the Family Law Section was the proud recipient of MABA’s 2005 Community Leadership Award, thanks to board member Larry Noll, who had the newly-published Domestic Relations Office Family Law Handbook for non-lawyers translated into Spanish. Other officers include vice president Art Rossi, secretary Crystal Bannin, and treasurer Lisa Dossman.

Family Law is evolving rapidly. Every day there are new perspectives -- especially on minimizing the impact of divorce on children. It is a daunting but worthy task. In no other area of the law is it so important for lawyers to be sensitive to the human factor where the ultimate goal is to collaborate in giving children the foundation they need to become healthy adults. As family law attorneys, we must be up to the task. Society depends on it.
