The Litigation section of the San Antonio Bar Association was resurrected several years ago under the leadership of David West of Cox Smith Matthews. David gathered a group of litigators, most with some degree of gray hair, and discussed the need for experienced trial lawyers to mentor young lawyers and provide practical, pertinent educational opportunities to new lawyers in our community. The section was reborn and has been actively working to build relationships among our trial lawyers and the judges before whom they appear. The section currently has over 200 members and has benefited from the service of past chairs David West, Justice Rebecca Simmons, Robin Teague and Annalyn Smith. One of the section's most popular programs has been the “Smorgasbord” series which is limited to section members. These sessions at Central Market Cooking School provide an opportunity to not only feed our hunger for knowledge by learning the inner workings of the minds of judges like Royal Furgeson, Ed Prado and Rebecca Simmons, but also to feed us literally. While our visiting judges impart bits of wisdom, the cooks show us how to prepare delicious entrees which we then digest along with the CLE. Future “Smorgasbords” will be scheduled. Also in the planning is an ethics course on billing practices. We welcome suggestions for other programs that will provide real value for trial lawyers. |
