Updated Family Law Handbook released by the Community Justice Program and the SABA Family Law Section

The Texas Bar Foundation awarded a grant in the amount of $5,000 to the San Antonio Bar Association’s Community Justice Program (CJP) to edit and reprint the 2005 Family Law Handbook in both English and Spanish. The reprint includes updated information as well as a new section on the Children’s Courts. These handbooks will enable the Community Justice Program to provide its volunteers, legal aid organizations and community outreach programs easy to understand information relevant to family law cases and to provide greater access to pro bono legal services to the low-income residents of our community. The updated Family Law Handbook incorporates all of the relevant changes to the law over the last few years, new contact information for the resource and referral guide and a completely new section on the Bexar County Children’s Courts. A committee of volunteer judges and family law attorneys helped create the new edition and ensured that the sections are correctly and appropriately updated. There are a total of 8,000 handbooks with 6,000 in English and 2,000 in Spanish. All interested organizations and attorneys are invited to attend to pick up this valuable free resource. Due to the rising number of family law cases in the Bexar County Courthouse, the CJP and the SABA Family Law Section recognize the need to provide accurate information about this area of law. This handbook is NOT a replacement for retaining an attorney or seeking legal advice and not intended to act as a guide to pro se representation. It is advisable that anybody involved in a family law case hire an attorney. It is an educational tool intended to educate and inform the public with a basic primer on family law and what could be expected in a family law case.
