For security purposes, all persons entering the Courthouse or Justice Center must pass through metal detectors, and may be subject to a personal search. No pocket knives, knitting needles, embroidery needles, etc., will be permitted into the premises.
You may be fined from $100 to $1,000 for being late or for failure to respond to Jury Duty at the summoned date and time.
Parking
There is parking available in the downtown area but it can fill up on high traffic days. It is advised that you arrive early enough to obtain a parking space in a nearby garage.
Parking reimbursement is not provided by the Central Jury Room. Nor is the Central Jury Room responsible for any parking tickets obtained by the individual.
Parking at the parking meters is not advised. The courts cannot allow anyone to leave the courtroom to insert change in the meters.
One alternative to parking in the immediate Courthouse area is to park in VIA's Ellis Alley Park and Ride lot at St. Paul's Square. Then catch a VIA streetcar from there directly to the Courthouse. Parking at the Ellis Alley Park and Ride lot is free to streetcar patrons.
Statutory Exemptions
(Ch. 480, Sec 62.106 Government Code)
A person qualified to server as a petit juror may establish an exemption from jury service if that person:
is over 70 years of age
has legal custody of a child or children younger than 10 years of age and serving on the jury requires leaving the child or children without adequate supervision
is a student of a public or private secondary school (must provide proof)
is a person enrolled and in actual attendance at an institution of higher education (must provide proof)
is an officer or an employee of the senate, the house of representatives, or any department in the legislative branch of the state government (statement must be notarized)
is the primary caretaker of a person who is an invalid, unable to care for himself (not employed outside of the home)
Statutory Qualifications
(Ch. 480, Sec 62.102 Government Code And Article 35.16 Code of Criminal Procedure)
A person is disqualified to serve as a petit juror unless that person: (If not qualified by statute, the affidavit attached to your summons must be sworn to before a notary public and returned)
is at least 18 years of age
is a citizen of this state and of the county in which one is to serve as a juror
is qualified under the constitution and laws to vote in the county in which one is to serve as a juror
is of sound mind and good moral character
is able to read and write
has not served as a petit juror for six days during the preceeding three months in the county court; during the preceding six months in a district court
has not been convicted of a felony
not under indictment or other legal accusation of misdemeanor or felony theft or any other felony
